Principal's Reading Challenge

Well . . . the challenge is set! If the students at Fred Assam Elementary read for a total of 100,000 minutes beginning Monday, September 13 - Monday, October 4 . . . I will allow them to duct tape me to the wall! Yes, you heard me right ~ duct tape me to the wall. I gave the students three choices and this was the selected choice. If all goes as planned, we will gather before lunch in the commons area. Each student who reads will earn 1 strip of duct tape to fasten me to the wall. I plan to remain on the wall during the noon hour and then,

hopefully, someone will come to free me! This also happens to be our "GRAND LUNCH" in connection with the PTA Book Fair! Come and enjoy the festivities!!

Fire Safety House

3rd grade students participated in fire safety and awareness when the Sioux Falls Fire Department made a trip to Fred Assam Elementary School. The firemen brought the Children's Fire Safety House so that students could experience what it is actually like to be in a room filled with smoke. They also practiced getting out of that room safely. "Thank-you" to the firemen that came to our school and helped us learn about fire safety!

We are grateful for the gift of your child; we ask that your child be grateful and proud of his/her own accomplishments and for the accomplishments of others in our school family. Safe ~ take steps to form respectful relationships with adults and other students; know how to avoid and reduce conflicts in the classroom and during activities. Responsible ~ come rested and ready to learn; complete homework and reading for enjoyment each evening.

Disability Awareness

Many "thanks" to Carin and Teresa. They volunteered their talents to help educate our Fred Assam Elementary students; to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome and other disabilities.

Buddy Walk ~ this week!

Just a reminder! Buddy Walk is this Saturday, September 11. Registration begins at 10:00; 1 mile walk at 11:00; and lots of fun with music, games, and food 11:00 - 1:00pm. Join us at Sertoma Park; All Fred Assam students and their families are invited to attend.

Therapy Dogs International

Meet Frisco! He is a "Tail Waggin' Tutor"! Frisco, along with his trainer Warren, will be coming to Fred Assam Elementary School each week. You will find Frisco & Warren nestled into a cozy spot in the library ~ listening to 2nd and 3rd grade students read out loud. Four students will read for 15 minutes each during their time with Frisco & Warren.

"Tail Waggin' Tutors" program is one of Therapy Dogs International's many services. Schools have already discovered the value of Therapy Dogs. It is so much fun for children to read to a trained, patient Therapy Dog. What a wonderful incentive to read! Children can enjoy the wonderful, magical world of books in a positive and unique way.

Frisco & Warren will visit and read with students every Tuesday.
