I caught these students just hanging out on the sidewalk in front of the building. 5th grade students illustrated their knowledge of the skeletal systems with sidewalk chalk. What a clever way to study and practice the bones in the body while adding a little color to our entrance!

Another tree donated to Fred Assam Elementary

Isaak Walton League provided a tree in honor of Arbor Day and our third grade students! Anderson Landscaping planted the tree and members from the Isaak Walton League gave a short presentation to third grade students on how Arbor Day came to be. One more memorable moment that will last for many years!

The sidewalk is cemented!

The long-awaited sidewalk is finished! Walkers & bikers have been using the sidewalk all week. The cross walk area has been moved farther to the north so that it empties directly into Mystic Meadows. A little finish work and signs have yet to happen ~ but it's looking good for a safe route to school!

My Friend ~ Kennedy

My friend Kennedy was a guest at the QU Wedding. She enjoyed the Hokey Pokey & the Chicken Dance with the other guests from the wedding. Of course, we enjoyed some bubble-blowing, too!

QU Wedding

Now . . . we all know that kindergarten students and the things that they get to do in kindergarten are just ever so cute! I have to admit that the QU Wedding is probably the neatest kindergarten activity I've ever seen! And . . . I even got to participate in the QU Wedding as the minister! Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join two very special letters Q and U in matrimony. Miss Q, do you promise to lead Mr. U in all your words? Please answer "I do". Mr. U, do you promise to follow Miss Q in all your words? Please answer "I do". Kindergarten students represented the letters of the alphabet as guests for the wedding and filed into the gym for the ceremony. No wedding is complete until we go to the reception and open gifts, too. Don't forget the wedding dance ~ with the Chicken Dance & Hokey Pokey! Students followed Q and U outside for a little bubble-blowing to complete the adventure. Thanks Mrs. Feenstra for such a memorable event for these students!!

Math Facts - 3rd grade

Congratulations to Samantha! She has completed the entire Math Facts in a Flash program as a third grade student! Hailey is close on her heels! It won't be long and she will soon finish the program as well. WOW! We sure have smart students at Fred Assam Elementary!

Arbor Day trees

It all started with a little Friday night conversation at 1st grade teacher Mrs. Aanenson's house. She and her husband were visiting about the possibility of 1st graders planting a tree at Fred Assam Elementary for Arbor Day. That conversation soon turned into other teachers finding out the idea and wanting to include their classrooms as well. Students were asked to donate whatever amount they would like to in hopes of earning enough money to buy one or two trees. In just a few short days, students and staff gathered over $800!! The Aanenson's purchased trees ~ many varieties of maple ~ one tree for each grade level; with one exception. Third grade has two trees! Mrs. Aanenson's husband, John planted all of the trees with the assistance of Jason from the BV grounds crew. John also gave a little presentation to each grade level when they planted the trees. Many "thanks" to Mrs. Aanenson and her husband John, Jason, and all of the students and staff who donated to the tree fund! It will be just one more wonderful memory for our first year here at Fred Assam Elementary School!

Pizza and a Bedtime Story

Visitors to the Book Fair had an extra treat! Families could buy pizza, juice, and cookies before and after they did their shopping. Readers were scattered throughout the building as well. Younger siblings ~ and students ~ enjoyed listening to a variety of stories read by our volunteer readers.

Nazar completes math facts!

4th grader Nazar completed his Math Facts in a Flash and received his award! Way to go, Nazar!

Polar Plunge

What an exciting Saturday afternoon! I had to go and check out the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics happening at Falls Landing! It was a beautiful day ~ outdoor temperature at 64 degrees and the announcer reported that the water temperature was at 58 degrees.

Checking out the water temperature with their dad (in the water!) are Noah - 1st grade, Isaac - 5th grade, and younger brother Daniel - not yet in school. Noah and Isaac attend Fred Assam Elementary School. They all raised money for Special Olympics and got to jump, too! Brandon Valley School District had two teams ~ BE teachers (5th grade FAE teacher Mr. Woodle jumped with that team) and HS teachers (principals Mr. Freking and Mrs. Heyden jumped with that team). Fun was had by jumpers and the many spectators that watched the event! Way to go, Isaac, Noah & Daniel! We are proud of you!!

Who's This Easter Bunny?

Easter Bunny visits Second Grade

I happened to be visiting second grade last Thursday ~ and suddenly, there was a slight knock on the door and in walked . . . THE EASTER BUNNY! This little bunny stood only about 4 feet tall (not counting her ears!) and was loaded down with Easter goodies for the second grade students. Students and staff alike squealed with delight as she made her way around the room ~ a cute little wiggle to that tail on her behind! Peter Pan

1st and 2nd grade students were treated to an afternoon at the theatre today! Brandon Valley High School is presenting the play Peter Pan this week. Wednesday afternoon was the first public performance ~ matinee ~ for elementary students from the District. Congratulations to Jenna S., Trey R., Mason B., Johnny H., Lexi H., Kaylee M., Kaija M., and Tanya T.! These Fred Assam Elementary students auditioned and were selected to participate in the play. They have participated in many long hours of rehearsal and performance. "KUDOS" to the cast and crew of Peter Pan for their amazing performance today! Once again, Brandon Valley students have blown me away with their commitment to excellence! The Performing Arts Center is a fabulous facility and definitely adds to the excitement for elementary students (and adults) of going to the theatre.
