Just call her Grandma!

Secretary Debbie is now Grandma Debbie! Son Jeff and his wife Liz are the proud parents of Carter ~ first grandchild for Grandma Debbie and Grandpa Roger. We couldn't resist decorating the office with a little blue to help Debbie celebrate this week.

Movie Incentive for Accelerated Reader

Read ~ Read ~ Read!! Students who made their 1st quarter AR goal were treated to a movie in the gym. Students brought their blankets, sleeping bags, pillows ~ so they could get comfortable during the movie. It's simply more fun to watch a movie when you're camped out with about 150 kids in a large gym and the movie is up on the wall.
Hopefully, every student is already reading to meet their 2nd quarter AR goal!

After School fun with YES

Did you say "Aloha"? There's always something fun happening at the YES after school program! Last Friday, coordinator Lindsey had students in hawaiian attire, painting pumpkins, frosting cookies, and playing games.
If you're looking for a place where your student can have another option to day care or home alone ~ check out the after school program. If you would like more information ~ be sure to give Youth Enrichment Services a call.

Oh ~ How fun it is to roller skate! Many students and their families came to Carousel Skate on Tuesday night. Whether it was roller skating, eating, playing games, visiting, or watching the excitement on the rink ~ everybody had a great evening! PTA sponsored the evening of roller skating. My legs are mighty sore today ~ at least no broken bones, though! Another evening of roller skating will be held in the spring. Come join us!

Lynx prowls at Fred Assam Elementary

Walkers with the mileage club had an unexpected visitor on Monday morning. Brandon Valley's own Lynx arrived at the school and walked the loop with students. This fine feline kept right in step as students continued to pound the pavement for punches on their mileage card. Students are earning silly bands for completed mileage cards while enjoying a healthy walk three mornings each week. Mileage Club is sponsored by our PTA and ends on Friday, October 29.

Raiders football

It was the Raiders vs the Jets on Saturday morning. And it was an absolutely beautiful morning to enjoy a football game! These four Fred Assam Elementary players were really movin' and groovin' out on the football field. Burke, Josef, Isaac, and Eli are members of the Raiders team. They played hard! Way to go, guys!!

Chris P. Chicken makes appearance at Fred Assam Elementary!

What was that? OH MY GOSH! IT'S A GIANT CHICKEN! I'm sure a few drivers along Six Mile Road slowed down to take a second look! Chris P. Chicken made an appearance on Wednesday morning during the Mileage Club walking time. Students enjoyed the time with Chris P. Chicken and had "him" walking, jogging, dancing, high-5-ing right along with them. After such a demanding work-out, Chris P. Chicken flew back to the Pizza Ranch chicken coop.

Taco John's soccer team

Meet the girls from the Taco John's soccer team! Samantha, Sarah, Danica, & Victoria. These girls are four very talented soccer players! Their last game of the season was last Saturday and they beat their opponents from County Fair. They had another undefeated season! Samantha's dad, Bruce coaches the Taco John's team. I'm so excited that I had the opportunity to see the girls in action ~ it will be fun to watch them enhance their soccer skills over the next few seasons. These four girls represent Fred Assam Elementary School very well and we are proud of your accomplishments on the soccer field! Keep up the super soccer scoring madness!

A special treat for me!

I had a wonderful surprise phone call last Friday telling me that the 5th/6th grade football team from Groton would be playing football in Sioux Falls on Saturday morning. It was a wonderful experience for them to play football in Augustana's new stadium! Groton is the team dressed in black. Their opponents that morning were players from the Harrisburg area. What's really neat is that the coaches for these teams are brothers and their sons play on these teams. More than likely, this will be the only time that Groton and Harrisburg coaches/cousin's will ever meet for competition. Along with his team, my friend Luke is #52! Luke's mom and I had a great visit to catch us up on all the latest news! GOOD TO SEE YOU, GUYS!! I ENJOYED AN AWESOME FOOTBALL GAME!!

Fire Prevention Week

"Thank you" Brandon Fire Department! Volunteers came to Fred Assam Elementary and visited with our younger students about fire safety. They showed an excellent video to help us understand what to do in case of a fire at our home. They even dressed in their protective clothing to show us how they search for people during a fire. It was a super reminder for us to stay low to the ground as we leave a building that is on fire. The firemen's suits have lots of reflective strips on them so they can be seen easily. After our indoor visit, students got to pass through the cab of the fire truck and also see how fast and far the fire hose sprays water. This was a wonderful educational experience for our students ~ hopefully they will remember their fire safety lessons should they ever need them!
