Next week our school will celebrate "Read Across America". This is a national program to promote reading in our schools and homes. We are challenging our students to read 100 minutes in 1 week! Keep track of the minutes on your Reading Challenge sheet and turn it in on Friday, March 5. Our theme this year is based on the TV show "Survivor". Students who meet the goal will attend an assembly to celebrate and participate in a contest for the "Ultimate READING Survivor"!
The teachers at Fred Assam Elementary kicked off the Survivor event with some challenges of their own. The first challenge was the book on head & walk without dropping it challenge! Giggles and cheers came from the student section as 1st grade teachers Aanenson & Nuebel won the challenge and received their torches and "buffs" for their students.
Putting puzzles together was the second challenge of the afternoon. Each team had a floor puzzle to piece together to become the next survivor! It's not as easy as it sounds! Earning their torches and "buffs" for third grade are Bisbee & Jones.
Dr. Seuss books were included in the third challenge. The teams were expected to put the book titles in ABC order. Teamwork paid off in this challenge with Feenstra (kindergarten) and Peters (5th grade) earned torches and "buffs" for their grade levels.
Just try sorting through buckets of magnetic letters searching for the right combination of letters in order to spell The Cat in the Hat! How quickly can you spot those letters? Mrs. Sunne even tried to sabotage the other team with a friendly scuffle on the floor with Mrs. Scholten! That did not stop 4th grade teachers Scholten & Reiter in completing their challenge and earn the torches and "buffs" for their students!
Saving the best grade for last ~ Brown & Sunne finally earned their torches and "buffs" for second grade!
Many thanks for the three high school cheerleaders who joined us for some fun reading cheers!
Others events during the March 1 - 5 week are: Mystery Readers contest, book donations (new or not damaged) books will be given to Lutheran Social Services Refugee Program & Big Brother Big Sisters Program, and Special Guest local author Jean Patrick!
