Playin' Pink
Although the lynx volleyball team didn't come away with a win tonight, they should be extremely proud of the message they shared with the fans! They announced that over 500 pink t-shirts were sold between the two schools and about $2000 would be donated for breast cancer research.
I think it's awesome that two high school teams could come together in the spirit of competition & support such a wonderful cause. You continue to make me proud to be a lynx fan!
Wearin' Pink ~ Volley for a Cure
The Brandon Valley Volleyball team is promoting Breast Cancer Awareness during their volleyball match with the Watertown Arrows tonight. Both Watertown and Brandon Valley sold pink t-shirts to help support the cause. The kitchen crew and staff members wearin' pink!
I will have my camera along tonight to capture the plethora of pink! GO LYNX!
More lunch time winners!

National School Lunch Week
We are enjoying an All Star lunch week here at Fred Assam Elementary. On Wednesday, children wore their favorite sports clothes to school. It was neat to see all of the various teams represented! On Wednesday, there was a drawing for a new soccer ball and foot ball. Kaija and Luke were the lucky students to have their names drawn! Also happening during this special week, as students pick up their lunch trays some of them have a sticker on them. This simply means that they get an additional item for their lunch that day! What fun we have every day!!
"Thanks" to Gay (Nutrition Director) and the kitchen staff at Fred Assam Elementary for the terrific food ~ and extra fun this week!

Mileage Club
You Just Never Know . . . . .
No two days are ever the same in an elementary school. This proved to be true again today! During the morning recess, a first grader was walking during mileage club and his shoe flew off. No big deal, you say? Well, the shoe landed in the storm drain located in the bus parking lot. With many giggles and squeals ~ by Barb and myself, we removed the man-hole cover, located the shoe, and removed it by using a six-foot pole with a tennis ball on the end!! Put two women together and you just never know what we can accomplish!
The shoe was returned to its owner ~ and all is quiet on the home front . . . for now!

Floppy Cat author visits school
Kari Kay, author of Floppy Cat, (www.floppycat.com) visited Fred Assam Elementary School today. She based her children's book on the life of her real cat, Floppy, who was born with a balance problem. She is using his trials as a metaphor for the differences children are prone to spot. Floppy enjoyed his life. Never letting his challenges stand in his way of having fun.
Her tips for children include: * keep your head held high at all times; * don't let challenges hold you back from doing or getting what you want; * figure out what you want and go for it and be willing to learn new things; * believe in yourself! use your uniqueness to move forward in life; * stay positive! look for the good in every situation.
Information will be sent home with students on Wednesday on how to purchase a Floppy Cat book and/or CD. Kari Kay will also autograph each book that is ordered. Be sure to visit the Floppy Cat website!! Thanks, Kari Kay and Floppy!

Down Syndrome Awareness Month
What a pleasant surprise I got when I opened my e-mail! Rylee's mom sent a message out that KDLT did a story on their family for Down Syndrome Awareness Month. I missed the television run ~ but could find the story at http://www.kdlt.com/news/1011n1.html. Be sure to check it out! Carin ( Rylee's mom) also promotes New Directions ~ a Down Syndrome Association in Sioux Falls. Next year, Carin will take over as director of the buddy walk.
We are so glad to have Rylee in our Fred Assam Elementary family! Rylee is pictured here with her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Feenstra.

It's unusual to elect a 5th grader as President but because this is our first year, these 7 students feel that they are ready to be the 1st Student Council President for Fred Assam Elementary! (Vice-President moves from 4th grade to 5th grade President automatically)
Showing their leadership skills: Emmett, Keaton & Cole in the front row; Joseph, Carter, Julia & Lexi in the back row. Good luck, students!

Student Council
It's an exciting week here at Fred Assam Elementary School. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be electing their Student Council ~ the first for our new school! 3rd graders can run for class representatives, 4th graders run for class representatives and Vice-President, and 5th graders are elected to the other offices such as Secretary, Treasurer, Reporter, class representatives, and this year only - President. The newly elected Vice-President will move on to President next year. The students are allowed to put posters around the school. The posters are outstanding and very creative! I've included a few for you to view. Sorry . . couldn't include them all.
Book Fair
I would consider the Book Fair a huge success! There were many visitors over the last two days and lots of books, posters, pens, and pencils sold. "Thanks" to everyone who bought something at the Book Fair. Our library will receive many new books because of you! "Thanks" also to the many volunteers who planned, set up, and worked the Book Fair.
